This webinar presents a coupled Flownex and ANSYS CFX workflow for predicting gas turbine film cooling performance during the early design phase. The presenters introduce ANSYS's new Injection Region model, which provides a simplified yet accurate method for representing film cooling holes without the computational expense of fully resolved CFD meshes. Flownex is used to model the internal cooling flow network inside turbine vanes, calculating cooling air mass flow rates, temperatures, and heat transfer characteristics that are exchanged with the CFD model through co-simulation interfaces. Validation against a fully resolved CFD model shows that the coupled approach predicts film cooling hole flow rates and temperatures with good accuracy while significantly reducing computational requirements. The results demonstrate that combining 1D system simulation with reduced-order CFD enables faster turbine cooling design studies, optimization of cooling hole layouts, and efficient evaluation of aerodynamic and thermal performance.
