This example demonstrates how Flownex can be used to simulate transient heat load fluctuations in data center cooling systems and evaluate the effectiveness of different control strategies. A rapid increase in IT load, such as during AI training workloads, is modelled to assess how chillers, pumps, and thermal storage respond to changing cooling demands. The study compares traditional temperature-based chiller staging with improved control approaches, showing how unintended flow through offline chillers and delayed startup can lead to temperature excursions. By modifying the control logic to isolate offline chillers and stage equipment based on IT load rather than chilled water temperature, the system maintains a more stable thermal profile and significantly reduces temperature increases. The example highlights how Flownex enables engineers to test and optimize cooling system controls before deployment, improving reliability under demanding operating conditions.
