ABSTRACT
This study analyzes the performance and financial feasibility of a compressed air energy storage (CAES) system in Miaoli County, utilizing the underground aquifer. It consists of three parts. First, the system's performance was analyzed using Flownex software, building and validating a model based on the Huntorf case in Germany, which showed about 1% deviation in efficiency. Following this, the output power was adjusted to 2 MW for initial development. The second part involved analyzing geological characteristics using COMSOL software to establish a multiphase flow model, evaluating the flow rate and pressure needed for the CAES system. Finally, a financial analysis estimated component costs and assessed the levelized cost of the proposed CAES system, comparing it to other energy storage technologies to evaluate its financial feasibility. While the investigated designs for the target region in this study have potential for further enhancement, the analysis framework established can be applied in future evaluations of potential areas and financial viability, supporting the process of decision-making.
